Mechanical Engineering Design
By:Joseph Edward Shigley,Charles R. Mischke,Richard G. Budynas
Published on 2003-07-01 by McGraw Hill Professional

The seventh edition ofMechanical Engineering Designmarks a return to the basic approaches that have made this book the standard in machine design for over 40 years. At the same time it has been significantly updated and modernized for today's engineering students and professional engineers. Working from extensive market research and reviews of the 6th edition, the new 7th edition features reduced coverage of uncertainty and statistical methods. Statistics is now treated (in chapter 2) as one of several methods available to design engineers, and statistical applications are no longer integrated throughout the text, examples and problem sets. Other major changes include updated coverage of the design process, streamlined coverage of statistics, a more practical overview of materials and materials selection (moved to chapter 3),revised coverage of failure and fatigue, and review of basic strength of materials topics to make a clearer link with prerequisite courses. Overall coverage of basic concepts has been made more clear and concise, with some advanced topics deleted, so that readers can easily navigate key topics. Problem sets have been improved, with new problems added to help students progressively work through them. The book has an Online Learning Center with several powerful components: MATLAB for Machine Design (featuring highly visual MATLAB simulations and accompanying source code); the |FEPC| finite element program, with accompanying Finite Element Primer and FEM Tutorials; interactive FE Exam questions for Machine Design; and Machine Design Tutorials for study of key concepts from Parts I and II of the text. Complete Problem Solutions and PowerPoint slides of book illustrations are available for instructors, under password protection. A printed Instructor's Solutions Manual is also available, with detailed solutions to all chapter problems.

The Book of Massively Epic Engineering Disasters
By:Sean Connolly
Published on 2017-09-05 by Workman Publishing

It’s hands-on science with a capital “E”—for engineering. Beginning with the toppling of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, to the destructive, laserlike sunbeams bouncing off London’s infamous “Fryscraper” in 2013, here is an illustrated tour of the greatest engineering disasters in history, from the bestselling author of The Book of Totally Irresponsible Science. Each engineering disaster includes a simple, exciting experiment or two using everyday household items to explain the underlying science and put learning into action. Understand the Titanic’s demise by sinking an ice-cube-tray ocean liner in the bathtub. Stomp on a tube of toothpaste to demonstrate what happens to non-Newtonian fluids under pressure—and how a ruptured tank sent a tsunami of molasses through the streets of Boston in 1919. From why the Leaning Tower of Pisa leans to the fatal design flaw in the Sherman tank, here’s a book of science at its most riveting.

Engineering for Sustainable Human Development
By:Bernard Amadei
Published on 2014-08-01 by

The challenge of improving the daily lives of people in developing communities calls for a new generation of global engineers who can operate in environments vastly different from those in the developed world. Engineers must become creative and innovative as they contend with uncertainty, complexity, and constraints in unfamiliar cultural settings. They must also deal with a multitude of technical and nontechnical issues beyond their accustomed practice. In this book, Bernard Amadei addresses the role of engineering in poverty reduction and human development. He introduces a framework to help engineers conduct small-scale projects in communities vulnerable to the consequences of a wide range of adverse events. His framework combines concepts and tools traditionally used by development agencies with techniques from engineering project management and systems thinking. When blended, these tools and techniques from seemingly unrelated fields offer engineers better methods to manage the difficulties inherent in community development projects.Engineering for Sustainable Human Development is about the delivery of projects that are done right from a performance (technical) point of view and are also the right projects from a social, environmental, and economic (context) point of view. This multidisciplinary approach to sustainable engineering will be valuable to practitioners and students, as well as people associated with development organizations and aid agencies.

Engineering for Cats
By:Mac Delaney
Published on 2018-08-21 by Workman Publishing

There may be 100 million pet cats in this country, but who says that means they’re domesticated? Sure, they clean themselves, use a litter box, and hunt rodents, but cats are also territorial beasts who think furniture is meant for claw sharpening, and that running water is always better than still. In this inventive, surprisingly funny, and highly entertaining and practical book, Mac Delaney addresses the quirks of cat behavior through the mindset of an aerospace engineer (because that’s what he is!)—and gives us 10 projects that solve the most common sources of friction affecting cats and their doting owners. Take that preference for running water. Because cats don’t trust still water (in the wild, a stagnant pool can harbor disease), they’re often dehydrated and cranky. Here’s how to build not one but two different fountains that will provide fresh, moving water. Or another problem: Cats, diminutive in stature, can feel inferior around humans, causing them to act out in negative ways. The solution: Erect a cat shelf on your wall, giving your pet a prime perch and a height advantage. And that furniture scratching problem? Construct the Cat Cave—it has angled surfaces for optimal scratching, a curved top for ergonomic lounging, a carpeted interior for perfect napping, and an escape route out back for emergency exits. For any cat lover with a modicum of DIY skills, here’s a whole new approach to living happily ever after with your pet(s).

Story Engineering
By:Larry Brooks
Published on 2011-02-24 by Writer's Digest Books

What makes a good story or a screenplay great? The vast majority of writers begin the storytelling process with only a partial understanding where to begin. Some labor their entire lives without ever learning that successful stories are as dependent upon good engineering as they are artistry. But the truth is, unless you are master of the form, function and criteria of successful storytelling, sitting down and pounding out a first draft without planning is an ineffective way to begin. Story Engineering starts with the criteria and the architecture of storytelling, the engineering and design of a story--and uses it as the basis for narrative. The greatest potential of any story is found in the way six specific aspects of storytelling combine and empower each other on the page. When rendered artfully, they become a sum in excess of their parts. You'll learn to wrap your head around the big pictures of storytelling at a professional level through a new approach that shows how to combine these six core competencies which include: Four elemental competencies of concept, character, theme, and story structure (plot) Two executional competencies of scene construction and writing voice The true magic of storytelling happens when these six core competencies work together in perfect harmony. And the best part? Anyone can do it!

Logistics Engineering Handbook
By:G. Don Taylor
Published on 2007-12-14 by CRC Press

Achieving state-of-the-art excellence and attaining the cost reductions associated with outstanding logistics efforts is an obvious gain in terms of competitive edge and profitability. As logistics tools evolve in comprehensiveness and complexity, and the use of these new tools becomes more pervasive, maintaining a position of leadership in logistics functions also becomes increasingly difficult. And in spite of its importance not only to the bottom line but also to the functionality of your operations, logistics improvement often lags industry requirements. Taking a unique engineering approach, the Logistics Engineering Handbook provides comprehensive coverage of traditional methods and contemporary topics. The book delineates basic concepts and practices, provides a tutorial for common problems and solution techniques, and discusses current topics that define the state of the logistics market. It covers background information that defines engineering logistics, activities and implementation, transportation management, enabling technologies, and emerging trends. Each chapter includes either a brief case study overview of an industrially motivated problem or a tutorial using fabricated data designed to highlight important issues. Presentation, organization, and quality of content set this book a part. Its most distinctive feature is the engineering focus, instead of the more usual business/supply chain focus, that provides a mathematically rigorous treatment without being overly analytical. Another important characteristic is the emphasis on transportation management, especially freight transportation. The section on emerging and growing trends makes the handbook particularly useful to the savvy logistics professional wishing to exploit possible future trends in logistics practice. The handbook is a one-stop shopping location for logistics engineering reference materials ranging from basics to traditional problems, to state-of-the-market concerns and opportunities.

By:P. C. VARGHESE
Published on 2005-01-01 by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.

Foundation Engineering is of prime importance to undergraduate and postgraduate students of civil engineering as well as to practising engineers. For, there is no construction - be it buildings (government, commercial and residential), bridges, highways, or dams - that does not draw from the principles and application of this subject. Unlike many textbooks on Geotechnical Engineering that deal with both Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, this text gives an exclusive treatment and an indepth analysis of Foundation Engineering. What distinguishes the text is that it not merely equips the students with the necessary knowledge for the course and examination, but provides a solid foundation for further practice in their profession later. In addition, as the book is based on the Codes prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards, students of Indian universities will find it particularly useful. The author is specialized in both Soil Mechanics and Structural Engineering; he studied Soil Mechanics under the guidance of Prof. Terzaghi and Prof. Casagrande of Harvard University - the pioneers of the subject. Similarly, he studied Structural Engineering under Prof. A.L.L. Baker of Imperial College, London, the pioneer of Limit State Design. These specializations coupled with over 50 years of teaching experience of the author make this text authoritative and exhaustive. Intended as a text for undergraduate (Civil Engineering) and postgraduate (Geotechnical Engineering and Structural Engineering) students, the book would also be found highly useful to practising engineers and young academics teaching the course.

By:Institute of Medicine,National Academy of Engineering
Published on 2011-06-14 by National Academies Press

Improving our nation's healthcare system is a challenge which, because of its scale and complexity, requires a creative approach and input from many different fields of expertise. Lessons from engineering have the potential to improve both the efficiency and quality of healthcare delivery. The fundamental notion of a high-performing healthcare system--one that increasingly is more effective, more efficient, safer, and higher quality--is rooted in continuous improvement principles that medicine shares with engineering. As part of its Learning Health System series of workshops, the Institute of Medicine's Roundtable on Value and Science-Driven Health Care and the National Academy of Engineering, hosted a workshop on lessons from systems and operations engineering that could be applied to health care. Building on previous work done in this area the workshop convened leading engineering practitioners, health professionals, and scholars to explore how the field might learn from and apply systems engineering principles in the design of a learning healthcare system. Engineering a Learning Healthcare System: A Look at the Future: Workshop Summary focuses on current major healthcare system challenges and what the field of engineering has to offer in the redesign of the system toward a learning healthcare system.

Entropy Theory in Hydraulic Engineering
By:Vijay P. Singh
Published on 2014-06-01 by ASCE Publications

Entropy Theory in Hydraulic Engineering: An Introduction is the first book to explain the basic concepts of entropy theory from a hydraulic perspective and demonstrate the theory?s application in solving practical engineering problems. In the hydraulic context, entropy is valuable as a way of measuring uncertainty or surprise?or even disorder or chaos?as a type of information. As hydraulic systems become more complex, entropy theory enables hydraulic engineers to quantify uncertainty, determine risk and reliability, estimate parameters, model processes, and design more robust and dependable water hydraulic systems. Drawing on many years of experience applying and teaching hydraulics, Vijay Singh provides a clear introduction to the fundamentals of entropy theory as it has evolved over the past 40 years. He explores its application in five areas important to hydraulic engineers: velocity distributions, sediment concentration and discharge, hydraulic geometry, channel design, and water distribution systems. More than 170 solved examples illustrate these applications, and each chapter concludes with problem sets and plentiful references. By illustrating the power, usefulness, and versatility of entropy theory, this book puts a valuable tool in the hands of practitioners. Graduate students, advanced undergraduates, and their professors will benefit from the lucid explanation of a complex theory and its applications.

Automotive Engineering
By:Brian Cantor,P. Grant,C. Johnston
Published on 2008-02-19 by CRC Press

The current automotive industry faces numerous challenges, including increased global competition, more stringent environmental and safety requirements, the need for higher performance vehicles, and reducing costs. The materials used in automotive engineering play key roles in overcoming these issues. Automotive Engineering: Lightweight, Functional, and Novel Materials focuses on both existing materials and future developments in automotive science and technology. Divided into four sections, the book first describes the development of future vehicles, aluminum alloys for manufacturing lighter body panels, and various polymer composites for stronger module carriers. It then reviews state-of-the-art functional materials and smart technologies and projects in which application areas they will most impact future automotive designs and manufacturing. The next section considers the difficulties that must be overcome for light alloys to displace ferrous-based materials and the increasing competition from lightweight polymeric-based composites. The final section explores newer processing and manufacturing technologies, including welding and joining, titanium alloys, and durable, high-performance composites. With contributions from internationally recognized experts, this volume provides a comprehensive overview of cutting-edge automotive materials and technologies. It will help you understand the key materials and engineering concerns currently confronting this industry.

Beyond Engineering
By:Robert Pool
Published on 1997-07-17 by Oxford University Press

We have long recognized technology as a driving force behind much historical and cultural change. The invention of the printing press initiated the Reformation. The development of the compass ushered in the Age of Exploration and the discovery of the New World. The cotton gin created the conditions that led to the Civil War. Now, in Beyond Engineering, science writer Robert Pool turns the question around to examine how society shapes technology. Drawing on such disparate fields as history, economics, risk analysis, management science, sociology, and psychology, Pool illuminates the complex, often fascinating interplay between machines and society, in a book that will revolutionize how we think about technology. We tend to think that reason guides technological development, that engineering expertise alone determines the final form an invention takes. But if you look closely enough at the history of any invention, says Pool, you will find that factors unrelated to engineering seem to have an almost equal impact. In his wide-ranging volume, he traces developments in nuclear energy, automobiles, light bulbs, commercial electricity, and personal computers, to reveal that the ultimate shape of a technology often has as much to do with outside and unforeseen forces. For instance, Pool explores the reasons why steam-powered cars lost out to internal combustion engines. He shows that the Stanley Steamer was in many ways superior to the Model T--it set a land speed record in 1906 of more than 127 miles per hour, it had no transmission (and no transmission headaches), and it was simpler (one Stanley engine had only twenty-two moving parts) and quieter than a gas engine--but the steamers were killed off by factors that had little or nothing to do with their engineering merits, including the Stanley twins' lack of business acumen and an outbreak of hoof-and-mouth disease. Pool illuminates other aspects of technology as well. He traces how seemingly minor decisions made early along the path of development can have profound consequences further down the road, and perhaps most important, he argues that with the increasing complexity of our technological advances--from nuclear reactors to genetic engineering--the number of things that can go wrong multiplies, making it increasingly difficult to engineer risk out of the equation. Citing such catastrophes as Bhopal, Three Mile Island, the Exxon Valdez, the Challenger, and Chernobyl, he argues that is it time to rethink our approach to technology. The days are gone when machines were solely a product of larger-than-life inventors and hard-working engineers. Increasingly, technology will be a joint effort, with its design shaped not only by engineers and executives but also psychologists, political scientists, management theorists, risk specialists, regulators and courts, and the general public. Whether discussing bovine growth hormone, molten-salt reactors, or baboon-to-human transplants, Beyond Engineering is an engaging look at modern technology and an illuminating account of how technology and the modern world shape each other.
